CI and Wisdom

This is a space where we can explore the relationship between collective intelligence and wisdom. Clearly, it is possible to have CI that is not wise (e.g., it takes collective intelligence to design technologies that can destroy the biosphere). In many cases intelligence that is collective tends to be more wise than most individual intelligence (taking into account more perspectives). What are the factors, principles, dynamics, precautions, etc., here?

Convening the New Cycle

In the conference call of March 15, 2007 we started exploring the possibility to shift our focus from convening the field of CI to a concept of CI Convergence as a living laboratory, a platform for:

1. Supporting social innovations at increasing scale, by boosting the collective IQ of their ecosystem

2. Advancing CI research and practice, by facilitating co-creative work on the edge that involves exchange among researchers and practitioners of various CI arts, theories, practices and sensibilities.

DEFINING "Collective Intelligence"

This is a discussion space in which to explore how we might best define the phrase "collective intelligence", so that it expresses both the essence of our individual approaches and the broad extent of the field as a whole. Here, especially, our diverse views can be a gift or a curse, depending on how we use them. Ideally, we will find powerful simplicity on the other side of the complexity of our differences.

Coordinating initial process design and policies for the interactive CI book

This group will be much more about content. Editorial - which old content needs to be removed, coordinating the launch of the site, setting minimal conditions for site launch, etc.

One of the key features this will be used for in the near term is specifically listing content and modules to be marked for deletion.

This is a discussion area to explore how to talk about our field in generic ways, beyond the many vocabularies we have each developed and/or used to talk about our piece of the field.

This is a discussion space to explore who and what we think should be included in "collective intelligence as a field of study and practice" -- even even if people involved in those aspects of CI don't speak of themselves in those terms. For example, many dialogue practitioners don't think of what they are doing as a facet of "collective intelligence", but that doesn't negate the role of dialogue in generating collective intelligence.

This is also a space to explore relationships among the varieties of -- and approaches to -- collective intelligence.

What is the capability repertory that a community needs to possess, if it wants to guide its evolution toward a preferred future?

It is a living, breathing ecosystem of individual and collective talents, knowledge, and experiences, which self-configure and re-configure into patterns that match the community's changing, key challenges and opportunities.

To visualize that ecosystem, let's look at it from an pattern-seeking, architectural perspective. Why "architectural"?

Presencing the future of CI Convergence

Dear Co-Conveners,

Our journey to convene the convergence of the Collective Intelligence field has been, in my experience, a remarkable practice in living in the unknown, letting go of some treasured ideas, sensing into what wants to emerge, and (somewhat) fearlessly experimenting with technologies and methods. I have been heartened to find that we strive to listen to each other empathically and generatively -even when that is not easy- and that we seek to find out what the participants really want, even if we're a bit timid about calling them up.

RESEARCHING CI

This is a discussion space to explore research questions that could make a real difference in furthering the field and capacity of CI in the world. These can be in any aspect of CI, or can integrate several. It can be theoretical or practical, in any form. Entries should include how the research would add value. We hope to generate a compelling collection of inquiries that could attract support.
